A middle-aged woman
named Bayamma has overtaken the charge of traffic controlling in Taramani
junction on her own after her daughter was met with an accident in that same
busy street. The junction is left without any traffic signals or a security
officer to control and maintain the vehicles. As it is a hectic and busy
street, there is a high possibility of accidents due to the lack of proper
controlling.
One night,
Bayamma's daughter was crossing the street, a motorbike hit her which Injured
and hospitalised the young girl. As a precautious measure to such incidents,
Bayamma decides to take matters on her own hand and from the next day onwards,
she stood at the centre of the junction and started to direct and control the
traffic. Bayamma is actually a cleaner in a hospital situated at Taramani.
After her working hours at the hospital, she spends the rest of the day as the
traffic controller. She starts her duty from 6'o clock to 8'o clock in the
morning. Then in the afternoon, her work extends from 4'O clock to 8'O clock at
night. Bayamma says, even though many police officers Patrolling around the
area has seen her, nobody took the effort to remove her from the spot. It is
only after she got media coverages, the case went viral and Police was compelled
to stop her from doing this. But according to Bayamma, she genuinely wants to
take up this job, neither as a protest nor as a complaint, but to help people
to have an easy and safe journey.
School kids who
regularly use the street have responded that Bayamma has been a good help to
them as she helped all the kids to cross the street safely. Previously it was a
very difficult task for them; says some students. Selvaraj, a carpenter from
the neighbourhood also stated that Bayamma's effort should get proper
recognition because she's doing a very helpful job for the travellers.
Even if Bayamma is allowed to continue or not, it is not at
all right to leave the junction abandoned without attention as there are many
such unheard voices crying out for helping them from such high risky and busy
traffic areas.
