Though the government has made a relentless effort to keep the city clean still there are some areas still living without proper sanitation there are no proper waste bins to throw the garbage. There are some areas in which the municipals have not even covered.

There are areas that the municipal don’t even reach to clean up as a result the locality lives in nasty places with obnoxious odours that comes out of those decomposed waste, the waste bins are not provided to those areas, as a result people find now where to dump those waste and they find out particular place to throw the garbage. Those obnoxious places are not confined only to Choolaimedu there are many other places in Chennai where which people live in an unhygienic condition.

Those inappropriate dumping of waste makes people awful to pass the road, reckless dumping not only makes the places ugly but also degrade the quality of soil and contributes towards the soil pollution as it eventually makes the soil marshy and produce foul smell.

In order to prevent those reckless dumping proper facilities should be provide to the people residing mainly in slum areas.

 This mainly occurs in slum areas where people live so congested without having a space to move around, eventually this may lead to the numerous diseases because of the lack of fresh air to breathe in.

A number of letters appear in the media particularly in the neighborhood newspapers about such conditions but I wonder whether anybody in the civic administration take note of them at all. Just like the residence, the administrative missionary also seems to have got use to such garbage scenario and the nauseating smell.

No society can call itself civilized when such conditions exceed. During rainy days, it is a common site to see roads flooding with water and drainage manholes over flowing. It is pathetic to see people living in such contaminated environment. Under such conditions it is not surprising that a contagious disease like leptospyrosis whose occurrence was not known in the city a few years has now become so common.

Veena Maker Shankar

shankar from mandaiveli is  an expert in veena making and he has made 500 veenas in life . His shop is 54 years old .

Chennai mandaiveli september 28 : shankar from madaiveli he is an expert in veena making he has been making veena from more than 32 years . he learned this art from his father and grand father , his family is involved in musical instrument making from 3 generations and now shankar son has also involved in this .

shankar has studied until 12 hew has 3 children last one he is accompanying his father in veena making , shankar also knows to play veena to an extent of knowing swaranayam . almost 10 veenas are serviced per day and 5 veenas are manufactured per month . veenas can be made only when they have a touch in music at least swaranayam .

shankar learned his art of work from his father and grand father by just looking and listening to their work he says that in areas different veenas are made each veena is engraved and hand made and the cost of the veena is according to the materials used and the work involved in it. during navarathri time the veena sales is more, and the foreigners show more interest in buying the veena and other string instrument.

shankar not only makes veenas but also other string instruments like violin , guitar etc. the veenas that he make is made of jack wood the reason behind it is that jack wood stays the same without any distraction in almost all the seasons. during navarathri as its believed that is a this time to start a work or business many people buy veena for their musical teaching classes.

veenas cost according to the work involved some veenas are engraved on the jack wood and the strings are really sensitive the highest price may cost upto 60 thousand the lowest is 16 thousand. 

when shankar grand father was young he was interested in learning music but as he was not capable of being a musician he learned making musical instruments to fulfill his desire he started as a business and spread to the generations and shankar on looking at this father and admiring his work has learned to make veena and his involved in this art of work and also has given it to the other generations .

Navaratri Golu in Mylapore

Nine days of Golu sale has started in Mylapore. People from different places are in Mylapore to purchase the dolls for the Durga puja. The prices are high compared to the last time.

Chennai, Mylapore 28-september: As usually Mylapore is known for the festive sale. For every festival ,most importantly Hindhu's, number of shop vendors concentrate on selling the statues or the dolls or the things those are very much connected to the festival and the devotees. During diwali divas are sold, lord ganesh statues for Vinayaka chathurthi and now it's time for the "GOLU".

Many shops have appeared throughout Mylapore for the Navarathri sale. Shop vendors have arranged huge number of dolls in order for the sale.People are crazy on spending thousands of money on buying the dolls. The shop vendors are the local guys who are attached with the business from generations. The shop vendors set up this business for one time in the whole year and that is the Navarathri time.

"we work in different areas and on during the nine days of Durga puja we come here and set up the golu dolls for the sale as it is practiced from generations. we are doing this business from forty years."says a shop vendor. The dolls are imported from Kanchipuram, Kadalur and Panrutti. They range from rupees fifty to rupees five thousand and more than that. It depends up on the size of the doll.

The dolls are made out of clay and paper matte. Paper matte is a bit costlier than the clay and paper matte is bought by most of them as it's not easily breakable. There are people who are very much interested in buying clay dolls too. They are very much in particular in buying clay for the holy saying that the natural way is always good and will bring they prosperity.

A temple trustees were in Mylapore to buy the dolls for the Navarathri golu in the temple. They came from Guduvanchery. They bought a statue made out of clay which costs about three thousand rupees. The statue was of the lord Krishna and Radha, Krishna playing the flute next to a cow. While asked them the reason to spend so much of money on a doll, one of them named Vijayalakshmi said that "We keep the golu for nine days in the temple. every year we come here to buy any one doll at least. because it's a custom that in a golu there must be a doll that is bought new. It may be anything and not particular that it has to be god's statue. As it's for temple we bought Lord krishna's."

A woman who is one among the sellers has been on the business from thirty two years. she is doing it from her childhood along with her mother and now with her son. She says that" Am selling the dolls for the golu from thirty two years, from my childhood. I was accompanying my mother while she was involved in the same work. And now it's me who has taken the business. Am a house wife and i do this just once in an year during this time"says Ammu.

One of the sellers had spoken about the days they open the shop for selling the dolls. he said that the shops will be opened before full moon day and the sales starts from then. The dolls are imported from different parts of tamil nadu and sold here. The prices are higher this time but the people are yet interested in buying them.

The history behind having Golu in every house is that they do the puja for nine days for three gods especially Lakshmi, Saraswathi, durga. Three days for lakshmi, three days for saraswathi and another three days for Durga. As a custom they are not supposed to keep the sculptures or the frames of these pagon gods in the Golu,so the dolls made of clay are being followed as a custom. Any doll can be kept in Golu and food offered for the god should be filled with nine varieties of dishes.
